Tom & John
Tom Long spent his career with IBEW Local 26, working his way from apprentice to positions of greater responsibility. The union was where he built his skills, his career, and a lifetime of experience in the trade.
When it was time for his son to get started, Tom helped John enter the union. John would spend 15 years there, learning the work and building a foundation of his own.
1996
After 15 years in the union, John wanted a steadier balance between earning a living and being there for his family. Starting his own business offered a chance to shape both.
In 1996, he signed his first Yellow Pages ad at the end of the final day before the cutoff. He had thought so much about making the business work for his family that the representative’s question about its name caught him by surprise.
The answer came from that same family: Long. It was the start of the business known today as AJ Long Electric.
John & Matt
John brought the same care to teaching his son that he brought to a customer’s home. When Matt began helping at about 13, the first lesson was patience: forming small copper loops, over and over, until they were right.
Then came the standards behind the work: respect the home, take no shortcuts, and recommend the repair that’s needed. Doing right by people was part of learning the trade.
College & California
College and a career in other industries took Matt to California. In operations and business development, he learned to lead teams, build useful systems, and keep a business organized.
It was a different kind of work, with experience that would later find a place in the family business.
Family, together
Life in California brought new opportunities and a beautiful place to live. But a walk along the San Clemente pier brought a simpler thought into focus: family was on the other side of the country.
For Matt, returning home meant more time together and a chance to work alongside his dad again. Family had shaped John’s decision to start the business. It helped bring the next generation back.
